--- WHAT THIS IS --- So! This is a game about presenting a video game at a big video game expo - except that the game doesn't actually exist, and so you have to fake it by moving the character around with the mouse and pretending to jump and such. The "critics" (any gamer/journalist/passer-by) will take interest in the game as the player does well/believeably fakes an actual game, and will complain and lose interest if the game looks fake or buggy. And to pull this off, I need a lot of different voice clips for the various "critics". --- HOW THIS WORKS --- Each critic will get a series of voice clips that will trigger when the player trips certain "events", Whether that's playing well or clipping through blocks The events are set up in sub-categories, such that the deeper you go, the more specific the event will be. When an event is triggered, the game will pick a clip to play from that event's subcategory, as well as from any of the more general categories it's in. For example, if the player jumps too high, it will pick from any of the clips in its category number (122), "Player Jumps Super-High", plus any clips in the more general "Buggy Jumping" (12), as well as from "Buggy Physics" (1) and the "General Complaint" (10) category. In this way, the most general categories become the most important, as the game can fall back to them if the more specific audio clip can't be found, or else was played too recently. A category like "General Complaint" would need 2-4 different sound clips to cover things, while "Buggy Physics" could get by with 1 or 2. This also means that there doesn't have to be an audio clip for every single subcategory. A clip for every event for every critic would be overkill. If any given critic covers the most general catories, several of the major sub-categories, and maybe a few event-specific sub-categories at random, then the game as a whole will feel sufficiently alive. --- WHAT I'LL NEED --- BARE MINIMUM A critic could probably get away with ONLY having these clips, though it would have to be a very reserved critic: (91) "Intro/Curiosity" - The critic appears and watches the game. 1 clip will be fine. 2 would also be fine, but any more is unnecessary. (92) "Leaving/Disgust" - The critic is sick of watching and leaves. Again, 1. At most, 2 is fine. (10) "General Complaint" - The catch-all for complaints. I'd like 2-4 clips for this category, for some variety. (20) "General Interest" - The critic is engaged, and offers a rare compliment. 2-4 would be ideal, though you could probably get away with just 1. (0) "Idle" - If the critic has nothing to talk about, it'll pick an idle. These clips can be about anything. 1 clip will do. Any number is fine, though. (93) "Game Done/Success" - In the rare event that the player beats the game with the critic present, the critic will need something to say about this. SUB-CATEGORY COVERAGE Dropping a few clips into these sub-categories will help give the critic a little more to talk about: (1) "Buggy Physics" - The most important sub-category. I'd say 1-3 clips will help round things out. (3) "Feature Interaction Bugs" - Kind of important, but kind of tricky to come up with a line for, just due to how general a subject it is. Some sort of "What just happened?" clip will do. (6) "Game Looks Fun" - A clip or two expressing interest will do here. (7) "Player Does Well" - A clip or two expressing approval will work. (8) "Player Plays Badly" - One or two clips should do. These events will only happen if the player willfully messes up, though, so it shouldn't be common. MOST COMMON/IMPORTANT EVENTS These are some of the more common/defining events. When covering specific events, it would be best to take care of these ones first: (11) Player Moves too Fast (121) Player Floats (122) Player Jumps Super-High (133) Player Overlapping Walls (331) Player Doesn't Die on Spikes (411) Enemy Standing Still (421) Player Stomps Enemy, Nothing Happens (425) Player is Hit, Nothing Happens (71) Player Collects Goodies (72) Player Stomps Enemies (73) Player Beats Levels Also, a few of the sub-categories either don't need any clips, or else would be impossible to come up with anything to say for them. For example, (33) "Buggy Spike Collision" is a little redundant, as there's only one event in it. Just pick a few events that you could fill and go with it. --- ADDITIONALLY --- Additionally, each critic needs a value for how much he cares about each major subcategory, positive or negative. A value of 100 is an average care. The subcategories are, PHYSICS BUGS ANIMATION BUGS INTERACTION BUGS ENEMY BUGS ANOMOLOUS BUGS GAME LOOKS FUN PLAYER DOES WELL PLAYER DOES BADLY And also a value for how vocal the critic is, measured in delay between clips. 2000 is average, and 500 is "never shuts up". --- FILE NAME AND FORMAT --- Clips should be named based on the category number, then a hyphen, and a one-digit clip number, in case there are multiple clips for a single event. For example, two clips in the "Buggy Jumping" category would be named: 12-1.mp3 12-2.mp3 Clips should be saved as MP3 format, mono-only. Sound quality/bitrate isn't too important, as long as it sounds alright. Try to reduce background noise, if possible, and save clips at a consistent, acceptable volume. --- CHARACTERIZATION AND VOICE --- Any sort of characterization will do! You can aim for a stereotype of some sort (super-nerdy, hipster, game journalist, what have you), or else just talk in your normal voice, or pick an appropriate accent. As long as it's a voice that would fit in a video game expo and isn't especially offensive, it will do. Try to keep the clips short and to the point. And please, no profanity. --- LIST OF EVENT CATEGORIES --- KEY *** Vital ** Important * Helpful - Useful Whatever 91 *** Intro/Curiosity 10 *** General Complaint 1 ** Buggy Physics 11 * Player Moves too Fast 12 - Buggy Jumping 121 * Player Floats 122 * Player Jumps Super-High 123 - Player Jumps in the Air 13 - Bad Block Collision 131 - Player Floats Over Ground 132 - Player Clips in Ground 133 * Player Overlapping Walls 14 Player Moves Slow After Wall-Jump 2 - Player Animation Bugs 21 - Doesn't Play "Jumping" in the air 22 - Plays "Jumping" while on ground 23 Plays "Climbing" off of Ladder 3 ** Feature Interaction Bugs 31 - Buggy Object Collection 311 Player Doesn't Collect Goodies 312 - Player Collects Non-Goodies 3121 - Player Collects the Exit 32 Buggy Springboard Interaction 321 Player Stands on Springboard 322 Player Normal Jumps off Springboard 323 Player Bounces from Normal Ground 324 Player Bounces in the Air 33 Buggy Spike Collision 331 * Player Doesn't Die on Spikes 34 Buggy Key/Door 341 Player Opens Door without Key 342 Player Passes Through Door 4 - Enemy Bugs 41 Enemy Self Bug 411 * Enemy Standing Still 412 - Enemy Floating 413 - Enemy Overlapping Wall 42 Enemy/Player Bug 421 * Player Stomps Enemy, Nothing Happens 422 Player Stomps Normal Enemy, Player Dies 423 Player Stomps Spiky Enemy, Kills It 424 Player is Hit, Kills the Enemy 425 * Player is Hit, Nothing Happens 5 - Anomolous Actions 51 Player Dies for No Reason 52 Player Wins for No Reason 20 *** General Interest 6 ** Game Looks Fun 61 - Player Moves Fast 62 - Player Jumps High 63 Player Does Wall-Jump 64 Player Goes close to Spikes 7 ** Player Does Well 71 * Player Collects Goodies 72 * Player Stomps Enemies 73 * Player Beats Levels 74 Player Unlocks Door 8 ** Player Plays Badly 81 Player Hits Spikes and Dies 82 Player Hit by Enemy and Dies 83 Player Stomps Spiky and Dies 0 *** Idle 92 *** Leaving/Disgust 93 *** Game Done/Success
